How long does it take to build a granny flat?

We build the majority of our units in our factory and we deliver to site fully completed. The actual build process is usually 8-10 weeks. However, the council consent process can be anything from 3-8 months (depending on the site). If access is an issue, we also do build on-site in the Auckland area.

What are building consents?

At the beginning of any building project building approval from your local council is required. This Building Consent allows you to carry out work on a property. Applications are usually processed within 20 working days but can take longer if more information is required

What are Resource consents?

A resource consent gives approval for things like the use or subdivision of land, the taking of water, the discharge of contaminants in water, soil or air, or the use or occupation of coastal space.

So you could say it’s to look after the resources that will support not only your home but the area you live in.

What is a Code of Compliance Certificate (CCC)?

A Code of Compliance Certificate is a document that Council issues at the end of construction of a building. It is the result of an inspection carried out by the building consent authority (The Council) and the building passing.

What is a Development Contribution Fee

The council charges development contributions for residential developments. This fee is for the extra community and network infrastructure required as a result of the residential development.

Does the Auckland Unitary Plan mention granny flats?

The proposal mentions the following

– Stand-alone minor units limited to 65m2 and 5m maximum height
– Where to incorporate the minor unit into the original household,
– The height limit is the same as for the residential dwelling
– No internal access permitted between the minor unit and any attached garage or accessory building
– Allocated private open space

Cross-lease is a form of shared ownership where all owners have rights and responsibilities to the title. Before any major building work can take place on a cross-lease title, owners must get their cross-lease neighbours’ permission.

Feedback from our Happy Customers

Would just like to say thank you to the team at Unit 2 Go for what has turned out to be an excellent outcome.

In July 2016 we decided to put a new dwelling on a site we purchased at Coatesville to house my youngest son and his pregnant partner. We looked long and hard at many options and decided to go with Unit 2 Go as their kitset homes perfectly suited the landscape, their pricing was very competitive and most importantly they were able to offer a very reasonable timetable. After some discussion, we decided to run with partial kitset and partial on-site build as access was reasonably difficult. This was foreign territory for Unit 2 Go as their base was in the south of Auckland and we were well north. While they probably had their issues in getting labour up to our site this did not prove to be prohibiting in any sense and the job was completed in good time and with the minimum of fuss. When we met Mark on site he gave us some good ideas that we followed and the result has been a great fit with house and surrounding bush.

While I decided to undertake applications with the Council myself, Mark and Bryan provided excellent support and were most helpful in ensuring we gained the necessary Consents in a timely manner. My son and his partner were overseas during the build and the aim was to have it all completed for them to move in. We were probably a little ambitious but it was not long after they arrived back in NZ that they were moving in. The house fits in beautifully with the surrounding environment and the kids are over the moon with their new “digs”.

We have all been very pleased with what Unit2Go achieved for us and all in good time and on budget, despite the moving target set by my son’s partner and my wife.

We would not hesitate to recommend Unit2Go if you are looking to add a new dwelling that is competitively priced and very comfortable to live in.
